Myterious cause of rt leg pain?
Given the mechanics of your injury and your description of pain I would tend to agree with the diagnosis given. When one injures the periosteum (the thin covering over bones) it produces exactly the symptoms you describe. The pain seems more intense at night because you are still which allows swelling to build, and because your aren’t distracted by anything. I have experienced this pain (from another source) and completely understand what you mean. If your are not taking med’s, I would recommend ibuprofen or naproxen. Start with the dose and frequency stated on the package. If this helps but not quite enough, double the dosing amount on the package to reach prescription dose. STOP TAKING THE MEDS if you begin having stomach problems. That being said, hopefully you are not having symptoms of instability–buckling with turning/pivoting, giving way, and/or a loss of quad muscle tone. This could indicate a tear inside the knee such as meniscus or ligament. If so, or if your pain doesn’t begin to abate within the next couple of months, having MRI studies may be worthwhile. You didn’t mention where you are; if you are in the western US, Stedman-Hawkins is THE place to go.
